The war in Ukraine is at a critical juncture. Only this week, as peace negotiations began to see the light of the day, Keir Starmer announced that he wants to send up to 30,000 British and European ground troops to Ukraine alongside the lethal military aid worth billions that has already been sent over the past three years.

At a time when we are facing a massive attack on our standards of living, our government fails to help buffer the economic crisis but doesn’t hesitate to supply billions for the war chest.

Britain has been one of the biggest providers of military aid to the war effort in Ukraine, sending ground troops will only exacerbate and inflame the current situation, as we’ve seen in the past in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

Stop the War has and will continue to push for a peace process. We are calling on the British government to set aside all belligerent language and encourage everyone who is involved in the ongoing peace talks to negotiate for a full and lasting peace.

In the coming weeks, we need to intensify our campaign to ensure that our politicians recognise that as well as being a disaster for the people of Ukraine, sending ground troops could spark a much wider conflict beyond its borders. There should be a clear strategy for peace, as endless military involvement is not a long-term solution.
