World Beyond War: 5th annual virtual film festival starts next week!

Our 5th annual virtual film festival starts next week! This year’s film fest explores the untold stories of nuclear weapons through the films Nuked (2023), Atomic Homefront(2017), and Sand Storm, the Sahara of the Nuclear Tests (2008). From the Marshall Islands to St. Louis, Missouri, to the Saharan desert, these powerful documentaries expose the scale of destruction that nuclear weapons have had on communities and the environment, the impacts of which continue to this day.

How the virtual film festival works: When you register, you get access to the 3 films and the 3 Zoom discussions with key representatives from the films. You will get the screening links to watch the films on your own time throughout the month of March. Join us live on Zoom on March 15, March 22, and March 29 for the panel discussions! (The panels will also be recorded to watch on your own time.)

• NUKED (2023): Exposes the U.S.’s nuclear weapons testing in the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands during the Cold War, the consequences of which still reverberate down four generations to today. The panel discussion on March 15 will feature film director Andrew Nisker and Anderson Jibas, former Bikinian Mayor who is featured in the film. 
  
• ATOMIC HOMEFRONT (2017): Reveals St. Louis, Missouri’s past as a uranium processing center for the atomic bomb, and the governmental and corporate negligence that lead to the illegal dumping of radioactive Manhattan Project waste. The panel discussion on March 22 will feature Dawn Chapman and Karen Nickel, co-founders of Just Moms STL, who are featured in the film. 
  
• SAND STORM, the Sahara of the Nuclear Tests (2008): Re-examines the French nuclear tests carried out in Algeria in the 1960s, rekindling the debates about France’s responsibilities in Algeria, its colonial past, and nuclear crimes. The panel discussion on March 29 will feature film director Larbi Benchiha; Amel El Mejri, Programme Officer at International IDEA’s Tunis office; and Leila Hennaoui, Professor of International Law, whose research focuses on the legacy of French nuclear testing in Africa.
