Dear Abolition 2000 Supporters,
March 5, 2025, marked the 55th anniversary of entry-into-force of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). This anniversary comes during the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which – regrettably – none of the nuclear-armed States or States under nuclear umbrellas have supported or joined. Despite its limits and contradictions, during a time of growing nuclear dangers and uncertainties, the NPT remains the only binding commitment in a multilateral treaty to the goal of disarmament by the nuclear-armed States.
The Abolition 2000 Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons was founded during the 1995 NPT Review and Extension Conference and will be celebrating its 30th anniversary at the upcoming Preparatory Committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, April 28 – May 9, 2025 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
It its Founding Statement, Abolition 2000 called on the nuclear-armed states to “Initiate immediately and conclude” negotiations on a nuclear weapons abolition convention that requires the phased elimination of all nuclear weapons within a timebound framework, with provisions for effective verification and enforcement.” This demand remains as timely as ever.
We have ambitious plans to celebrate our 30th anniversary, but we need you to participate in and support these activities!
Join the Abolition 2000 Delegation to the NPT PrepCom
Abolition 2000 has been accredited to the NPT PrepCom. If you want to join our delegation, please contact Ivan Siluianov at [email protected] by April 10. (Please note: there are NO travel funds available.) If you’re coming with another delegation, please let Ivan know. Also, let Ivan know if your group is planning a side event during the PrepCom. We will jointly publicize side events by Abolition 2000 member groups.
Abolition 2000 at the NPT PrepCom
Abolition 2000 plans to hold an interactive side event during the PrepCom in advance of our virtual Annual General Meeting (see below), and we will be streaming a “live from the NPT” Zoom event (dates TBD). We are making plans for a BIG 30th birthday celebration at an outdoor location, featuring a dramatic public display of 2000 LED tea-candles! (Tentatively Friday evening, May 2.) Let Ivan know if you can volunteer to help! In the run-up to the birthday “candle lighting” event, we will be launching a social media campaign, on the theme “light a candle, make a wish,” led by the newly revitalized Abolition 2000 Youth Fusion network!
In order to accomplish these plans, and continue our work going forward, we’ll need some financial help from you! Abolition 2000 runs on an almost entirely volunteer basis with a truly bare bones budget. 2000 LED tea candles, an oversized birthday cake, copies and supplies will cost some extra money. If you can’t come to New York, please consider donating a portion of what you would have spent on travel and accommodations. Or, even if you are coming, think in terms of sponsoring an LED tea light (or more than one)! No amount is too small. And any amount will help. DONATE HERE.
Youth Fusion is Back
We’re thrilled to announce the revival of Youth Fusion! With a renewed core team and big plans ahead, we are more determined than ever to educate, connect, and empower the next generation of disarmament advocates.
This is just the beginning…together, we will spark conversations, mobilise communities, and drive real change toward a safer, nuclear-free world.
This is our time. This is our commitment. Let’s build a future where peace, security, and justice triumph over destruction.
