Britain’s nuclear submarines bill spirals by £5bn. The MoD blames inflation as the cost of replacing the UK’s at-sea deterrent hits £37bn. The cost of replacing the submarines carrying Britain’s nuclear deterrent has ballooned by more than £5bn in just three years, according to official documents. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has raised its estimate for the lifetime cost of manufacturing and maintaining four new ballistic missile submarines to £36.7bn as of March last year, up from an estimate of £31.5bn in 2020-21. It is also £2.5bn more than projected in March 2023.
