A message from Kate Hudson

I’m delighted to tell you that we now have a new treaty banning nuclear weapons.

The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) opened for signature three years ago; a treaty that will make nuclear weapons illegal in the countries that sign it. The treaty needed 50 countries to ratify it before it before it could come into force - and last night, we reached that milestone. This is a sea change in international law; never before have nuclear weapons been illegal.Leading celebrations, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced: “The only way to completely eliminate nuclear risk is to completely eliminate nuclear weapons. I look forward to the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Next steps – and how you can help

Shamefully the UK government refused to even participate in the treaty talks. But that won’t stop us from celebrating this achievement. This treaty is a victory for all peace loving people and the courageous states that have stood up globally to demand nuclear abolition. And it is a victory for grassroots campaigning and the anti-nuclear movement which has done so much to support the process. It is a potent reminder that whilst success might take some years, it is absolutely possible.

CND members like you have played a major part in this success, so thank you. I am sure you are as excited by this news as I am. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we very likely won’t be able to gather in one place and so we’re asking you to to create a CND symbol in your garden or home. Be as creative as you can! You could use ribbons, material or everyday items. Tealights outside could also look good. Take a photo and post on social media or send to [email protected]. Let’s make sure we mark this momentous moment in our campaign!

A global nuclear ban is here – let’s celebrate this achievement and work towards our next victory together. In peace,Kate Hudson
