The Salisbury Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament warmly welcomed the ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons [TPNW].
Countless like-minded groups in Britain and across the world, like Salisbury CND, have been campaigning for the United Nations to pass the Treaty for many years. Much credit is due to Nobel Peace Prize winners the International Campaign to abolish Nuclear Weapons [ICAN] for co-ordinating the effort to get the TPNH into international law, a Salisbury CND spokesperson said.
“Joy cannot be unconfined so long as Britain and the other nuclear-armed powers remain in an unholy pact to ignore this international obligation. Britain should note the number of Commonwealth countries, such as New Zealand and South Africa, which ratified the Treaty. While most of the European Union prefers to shelter under the dangerously leaky nuclear umbrella, a few have also broken ranks to sign the Treaty, which provides a glimmer of hope for the future.”
CND will continue to campaign relentlessly to get our Government to observe international law, and local political leaders in Salisbury and South Wiltshire should expect to be lobbied forcefully in the coming weeks and months.
