There’s still time to order white poppies in time for Remembrance Sunday. All orders placed from Wednesday 4th November before the 11th November will be sent first class.
You can buy white poppies online in packs of 5, 10, 25 and 100 at https://shop.ppu.org.uk/
For the first time this year, Welsh-language white poppies are available in our online shop. We also have a brand new educational resource for schools, teachers, parents and carers who want to explore the meaning of Remembrance Day in educational settings. The Peace Pledge Union has welcomed a statement from the BBC, who have said that their presenters may wear a remembrance poppy “of any colour”: https://www.ppu.org.uk/news/bbc-says-presenters-may-wear-white-poppies-air
The BBC statement came in response to questions from the Observer about white poppies. In more normal times, the BBC’s decision may have provoked an angry backlash from the militarist lobby. Coming on the same day that Boris Johnson announced the new lockdown in England, the statement went largely unnoticed in the media.
Some argue that white poppies should be excluded by organisations that allow red poppies, on the grounds that white poppies are “political”. In reality, white and red poppies are as political as each other.
According to the British Legion, red poppies represent remembrance for UK and allied military and “support for the armed forces”. White poppies represent remembrance for all victims of war, a commitment to peace and a rejection of militarism. If one of these messages is political, so is the other.
Next week, young PPU members and supporters will join young activists around the world in taking a stand against the militarisation of young people.
We are hoping to have a variety of events and actions including a film screening; more information will be coming out about this soon.
If you’re a young member or supporter, or know someone who is, we’d love more people to join us, and welcome any ideas of events or actions.
Please email [email protected] to get involved and visit the War Resisters International website for further information about the Week of Action.
