Civil nuclear power is thought to be about providing a low carbon energy alternative to fossil fuels and is seldom connected to nuclear weapons. But the closer you look these two industries are intrinsically linked for nuclear-armed countries. Josh Toussaint-Strauss investigates how the connection between civil nuclear power and nuclear weapons spans decades and continents as well as exposes siphoning of public money and the origins of the Iran nuclear program.

The links between the civil nuclear and defence nuclear sectors have been made explicit by the UK government in its Industrial Strategy.
An academic has told NCE that this makes clear that the UK’s pursuit of nuclear power has always been about progressing its defence nuclear capabilities.
The Industrial Strategy, published on 23 June, promises a raft of benefits for high growth potential industrial operators in the UK. …
The document highlights the fact that the UK was the first nation to deploy civil nuclear reactors and is a leading host of nuclear propulsion and weapons capabilities for the defence sector.
