Heatwaves this summer are extreme and, in countries with nuclear power plants, the industry must curb its operations due to water scarcity and overheating of cooling sources, report Karl Grossman and Harvey Wasserman.

Too darn hot for nuclear

Extreme heat and droughts make nuclear power plant operation more problematic and inefficient. But these weather extremes are the new norm under climate crisis conditions and nuclear power plants, whose operations heat up the water sources upon which they rely, aren’t helping. Further, when cooing water sources dry up or become too hot, nuclear power plants must shut down, making them exactly the wrong energy choice in a warming world.
