New statement, Medact Nuclear Weapons Group

Posted: 31st July 2025

At the NATO summit in June, member states pledged increased defence spending, while the UK announced the purchase of F-35A jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

In our new statement, Medact Nuclear Weapons Group unreservedly denounces the delivery of any jets intended to deploy any nuclear weapons from British soil.

The blog discusses:

  • NATO’s recent commitment: 5% of GDP for defence investment, with continued support for Ukraine.
  • The UK’s new nuclear deterrence: Announcement of 12 F-35A jets carrying nuclear weapons, marking the return of the RAF to nuclear deterrence after 30 years.
  • Escalation risk: The transfer of B61-12 nuclear bombs to RAF Lakenheath violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and increases the potential for an all-out nuclear war.
  • A global health crisis: Nuclear war is a public health emergency that can’t be addressed by medical advice. IPPNW and the World Medical Editors are calling for a renewed focus on nuclear weapons as a global health crisis
