UEFA could vote on banning Israel as early as next week

This could be huge. It is being reported that UEFA could vote on banning Israel as early as next week. But it won’t happen unless we continue to ramp up the pressure.

Write to Britain’s Football Associations to demand they take urgent steps to push for Israel to be banned from UEFA and FIFA.

Allowing Israel to remain in international sporting bodies sanitises its horrific oppression of Palestinians, and allows Israel to present itself as a normal country, obscuring the truth that it is carrying out a genocide and imposing a regime of military occupation and apartheid against Palestinians.

The Israel Football Association (IFA) directly participates in Israel’s crimes. It governs on behalf of football clubs based in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank.

In addition, Israeli football clubs have sent “care packages” to Israeli soldiers committing genocide in Gaza and organised videos of club employees serving as Israeli soldiers in Gaza as motivation ahead of matches. Moreover, fan groups of Israeli teams have a long history of racist violence and incitement against Palestinians.

The Football Association, Scottish FA and Football Association of Wales must use their considerable influence to push for Israel to be banned, including calling for the UEFA Executive Committee to be convened to vote on banning Israel.

If UEFA and FIFA do not ban Israel, Britain’s Football Associations should refuse to allow clubs to participate in matches with Israeli teams, such as Aston Villa’s upcoming match with Maccabi Tel Aviv in November.

Momentum is growing. Earlier this week, 7 UN experts called for Israel to be banned from international football, noting that “sporting bodies must not turn a blind eye to grave human rights violations, especially when their platforms are used to normalise injustices.”

Banning Israel from UEFA and FIFA would be a big step towards accountability for Israel’s genocide and increase Israel’s growing isolation on the international stage. But it won’t happen unless we act NOW.
