Today marks 25 years since the Human Rights Act (HRA) came into force. The HRA is without a doubt one of the most important pieces of legislation brought into power this century. In a functioning democracy, people must be able to stand up for their rights and freedoms. Since the year 2000, the Human Rights Act has given everyone in the UK the tools to do that.

It has allowed people across the UK to defend themselves against injustice, hold the powerful to account and stand up for our rights when public authorities fall short – it often protects all of us without us even realising.

That is why we celebrate the Human Rights Act today. It is a living testament to what is possible when we reject fear and division and focus instead on enabling everyone to live a dignified life.

So, wish a happy birthday to the Human Rights Act. It protects us, and we should make sure that we’re always prepared to return the favour.

Best wishes,
