With or without the racist Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans present, the match with Aston Villa should not go ahead on 6 November.

Football clubs from a state committing genocide and implementing apartheid have no place in international sports. Just as apartheid South Africa faced removal from international sporting and cultural bodies, so must apartheid Israel today.

While it seems now that the Maccabi fans won’t be attending the game, the government narrative in the run up to this has been grotesque. Government ministers have pushed for Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, with a proven track record of racist violence, to be allowed at the match, even outrageously suggesting that preventing these fans from attending would be a capitulation to antisemitism.

They have ignored and whitewashed Maccabi Tel Aviv fans long history of racism because to properly understand this racism, it must be recognised not as an aberration, but as a nasty byproduct of Israel’s racist apartheid system over the Palestinian people – a system that our political class continues to support.

Israel’s system of racism dehumanises Palestinians to such an extent that they have been subjected to two years of horrific genocide in Gaza, along with decades of ethnic cleansing and military assaults across the rest of Palestine.

The failure to see or name Israeli apartheid is a shameful indictment of the anti-Palestinian racism that infects many of our political leaders, and much of the mainstream media.

But we know that ordinary people in Britain stand with Palestinians. They know that matches with teams from apartheid Israel must not go ahead.

Sign our new petition to the FA and UEFA to demand that they take action to cancel the match.

Israeli football cannot be separated from Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people.

Maccabi Tel Aviv has been directly involved in Israel’s genocide in Gaza, including by sending care packages to serving Israeli soldiers.

The club is a part of the Israel Football Association which contains at least 6 teams based in illegal Israeli settlements based on land stolen from Palestinians in the West Bank.

Palestinians, including sports teams, are clear that Israel must be banned from international sporting bodies as a meaningful form of accountability for the violence that they face.
