Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World: introducing speakers and two new blogs from the NWG

Posted: 24th October 2025

Join us for an evening lecture on Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World! on 1st Novembe

A quick reminder: next Saturday, 1st November, we’re hosting an in-person event in London – bringing together expert speakers and campaigners to explore what it will take to build a world free from weapons of mass destruction, and how we can truly achieve health through peace. If you’re in London, register now to join us for Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World! Can’t make it? Share the event with friends or colleagues who might be interested.

In the lead-up to the event, members of the Nuclear Weapons Group are sharing reflections on key issues in the campaign for nuclear disarmament. Last week, we published The damages of nuclear tests on humanity, and this week we’re excited to share two new blog posts: The fallibility of nuclear deterrence and How can we bring about a world free from nuclear weapons? These explore the concept of nuclear deterrence and outline the steps we can take to move closer to a world without nuclear weapons.

Building a Nuclear Weapons Free World – Introducing our speakers!

In our last email we introduced our keynote speaker, Dr Carlos Umaña, and we’re now excited to share more about our two speakers who will be in conversation with Carlos following the lecture: Cordelia Vesely and Jake Atkinson!

Cordelia Vesely

Cordelia campaigns locally, nationally and internationally for a range of health, gender and environmental justice issues, including disarmament, demilitarisation and international humanitarian law. She has just finished her term as co-director of Students for Global Health UK, where she built student capacity in advocacy and policy making. Her work has taken her to the UN and been recognised by organisations like the IPPNW for whom she has led European sessions on human rights and peace.

Jake Atkinson

Jake is a campaigner on issues related to inequality and human rights. As Senior Adviser at STOPAIDS, he co-convened UK and global civil society alliances campaigning to improve equitable access to medicines, protect human rights, and improve funding to tackle infectious diseases. He was also part of the first Steering Committee of Youth for TPNW, the global movement of young people in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons from 2021 to 2024. He currently works for Tax Justice UK with a focus on taxing the super rich and big polluters, and on securing a bold United Nations Tax Convention.

After the evening lecture, join us for a drinks reception to round off the night. This will be a great opportunity to connect with others across the health justice movement, as well as those involved in nuclear disarmament and anti-militarism campaigns. Don’t forget to register!

In solidarity,
