Britain has committed to provide £4.5 billion this year in military aid to Ukraine, and within the current parliament has announced it will double its investment in drones to over £4 billion.
No wonder “the world is more unstable, more uncertain [and] more dangerous,” as stated by the Defence Secretary John Healey this week.
His solution? A “New Deal” for European military budgets, a deal which means European governments have committed to spend 5% of GDP on ‘defence’.

These obscene proposals come at a time when the government suggests investing in public services is irresponsible and the welfare budget is over-inflated. For the November budget Rachel Reeves has said she “can’t leave welfare untouched” and the Treasury is understood to be considering axing up to £1 billion in tax breaks for a scheme providing cars for disabled people.
The adoption of its wages not weapons policy by the TUC earlier this year was a significant victory for our campaign against military spending. But it is clear we need to ramp up our activities, and to do so we need your help.

Over the past two years we have played a crucial role in organising the Palestine demonstrations. For the 11 October demo alone we printed more than 80,000 leaflets and over a thousand placards. But it costs in excess of £3,000 to print on this scale. And we are now organising for the next national demonstration on 29 November.
We must continue to protest for Palestine – the killings continue and aid is still not being allowed through the Raffah crossing. StW is not just a key organiser of the protests and demonstrations but we are also arranging public meetings around the country and producing publicity materials. This is why we need your support.
Our winter appeal is our main fundraising activity of the year. We must reach our target of £75,000 by the end of the year if we are to continue to build an effective anti-war movement across Britain.
However small your donation it makes a difference. Together we can build a bigger and stronger anti-war movement.
