Gandhi, Mandela and the Suffragettes stand proudly in the heart of Westminster as symbols of courage and change. But despite being celebrated as heroes, they could face arrest under today’s anti-protest laws if they were still protesting now.

That’s why Greenpeace activists have ‘imprisoned’ these statues of history’s most celebrated changemakers: to expose the government’s hypocrisy and draw attention to the growing threat to our right to protest. [1]

We’ve brought the message to Parliament – will you now bring it to the Home Secretary’s desk? Share why protest matters so much to you.

Take part
We’ll be hand writing these messages and taking them straight to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Peaceful protest is how we’ve always come together to make change happen – from women’s suffrage to ending apartheid, to the work of Greenpeace and others to protect the environment today.

But now, this government is planning to introduce new laws that give police sweeping powers to shut down protests – undermining a proud British tradition of standing up and speaking out.

Shabana Mahmood, the new Home Secretary, has herself marched for causes she believes in. [1] But since coming into power, she has accelerated the clampdown her predecessor started – and the government is bringing in yet more restrictions in the new Crime and Policing Bill, currently making its way through Parliament.

Peter, will you tell the Home Secretary, in your own words, why protest matters and why it’s a British tradition worth protecting?

We’ve given you some prompt questions to help your craft something powerful

Once you’ve written your message, we’ll take your words and hand-write them onto a postcard. We’ll then send them directly to Shabana Mahmood.

When her office begins receiving personal stories, one after another, it will send a clear signal that people across the country still value and defend the right to protest – and expect her to do the same.

So please, Peter take two minutes now to share what protest means to you.
