Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

CND is deeply concerned about the successful testing of Russia’s 9M730 Burevestnik nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable intercontinental cruise missile.
It is reported that the missile flew 14,000-kilometres for over 15 hours, easily within reach of the US. In response, Donald Trump reminded Putin of the US nuclear submarines that are deployed “just off your shores”.

CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt CND blog, warning:

“This reckless nuclear brinksmanship feels like history repeating itself. Just last year, we all witnessed with growing horror the reckless escalation when the US and Britain let Ukraine launch ATTCMs and Storm Shadow Missiles deep into Russian territory, despite Russia lowering its nuclear threshold precisely in response to such a scenario.

But now, new US nuclear weapons designed to be used on the battlefield are stationed across Europe and in Britain, and Britain is expanding its nuclear capabilities. Political leaders must instead focus efforts on de-escalation and regional dialogue to reduce tensions and stop the nuclear threat.”

Amid the recent Russian and NATO military drills and nuclear exercises, the British public is being told that more military spending and the expansion of our nuclear weapons is needed to keep us safe. Yet, the reality shows we’re being prepared for war that risks an all-out nuclear confrontation.

Peterborough meeting on resisting nuclear expansion

Last weekend, Peterborough CND & Peace Campaign held a successful public meeting on resisting both the deployment of US nuclear bombs to RAF Lakenheath and Britain’s purchase of nuclear-capable F-35A fighter jets that will be based at RAF Marham, located just 40 miles from Peterborough.

The group called the meeting to bring together a local alliance against this nuclear expansion and the war drive. Contributors included local Councillor Dr Alan Dowson, who, as a nuclear test veteran, gave a very powerful testimony, CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt, activists from the Peterborough Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Green Party members, and environmental activists.
