Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip isn’t over. Before the ink was even dry on the so-called ceasefire agreement, Israel had killed scores of Palestinians, and it continued to impose severe restrictions on desperately needed aid. This week Israeli airstrikes have killed more than 100 Palestinians, including around 50 children.
Far from ending our campaigning – as some in the British establishment have demanded – we must deepen our efforts to end Britain’s complicity in Israel’s atrocities.
Write to your MP and ask them to support local council divestment from genocide and apartheid.
One of our core campaigns is to demand local councils divest pension funds from companies enabling Israel’s genocide and apartheid. That campaign has been taken to Parliament, with an amendment submitted that requires pension funds to end investments in companies complicit in genocide and illegal occupation.
20 years ago, Palestinian civil society organisations issued a call for boycott, divestment and sanctions. This campaign is part of the answer to that call.
MPs have already started adding their names to the amendment, but it’s still only a small fraction of the total.
Our research has found that Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) funds, administered by local councils, invest more than £12.2 billion in companies enabling Israel’s grave violations of international law. This includes companies manufacturing the bombs and bullets used to kill Palestinians, as well as companies that make the bulldozers used by Israel to demolish Palestinians homes, schools and hospitals across the illegally occupied Palestinian territory.
Local divestment campaigns are active across the country, with PSC branches building powerful coalitions of support to pressure their councils to divest from these complicit companies.
Last week, we had our most recent win, with Ceredigion County Council becoming the latest council to support divestment. More than 25% of Welsh councils now back divestment from companies complicit in Israel’s crimes and 24 councils across Britain support this move.
We have to build on this momentum. The amendment to the Pension Schemes Bill would require pension funds not to invest in ways that aid or assist genocide and illegal military occupation.
Following pressure from supporters like you, more than a dozen MPs have already backed this amendment – but the more MPs that support it, the more pressure that is applied to the government.

The unrelenting horror of Israel’s atrocities can lead to a sense of despair. But divestment campaigns are demonstrating that collective campaigning can make a difference.
Contact your local PSC branch to get involved in a divestment campaign near you.
In solidarity,
Dan
