Trump declared last week that the US would resume testing nuclear weapons. It’s not clear what he actually meant, but the statement has still shaken up the world order, writes Linda Pentz Gunter. And three women who have campaigned for decades for world peace still think it’s within reach. Danaka Katovich meets them.

Will the US resume A-tests?

President Trump declared last week that because “others [are] doing testing” the US would, too. He seemed to be referring to the testing of nuclear weapons, but none of the nuclear armed states have tested their nuclear weapons since the 1990s, with the exception of North Korea which conducted a one-off test in 2017. Nevertheless, Trump’s remarks engendered deep concern in peace and disarmament circles and prompted a stern rebuke from Russia. READ MORE

Three elders imagine peace

For Alice Slater, Carol Gilbert and Kathy Kelly, the Cuban Missile Crisis was an awakening of sorts about the dangers of nuclear war, and eventually a call to action. All three have dedicated much of their adult lives to campaigning for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Succumbing to a sense of doom is not an option, they say.
