Will you sign our petition to oppose this attack on our democratic right to protest?

This week the government tabled an extreme proposal in parliament to empower the police to further crack down on protests based on their ‘cumulative impact’. They want to silence our movement for Palestinian rights. Will you sign our petition to oppose this attack on our democratic right to protest?

Israel is continuing to unleash the most unconscionable violence upon the Palestinian people with ongoing military, economic and political support from the British government. Instead of ending this complicity, the government wants to put a stop to our marches.

If the government gets its way, the police will be required to take into account any cumulative disruption caused by past protests or planned future protests in the same ‘area’ when deciding whether to impose restrictions. This area might include an entire town or the whole of central London and it will not matter whether or not the protests are for the same cause or even involve the same people.

Watch this explainer video below.

Effective protests often recur in the same places – whether that is a seat of power like Westminster or a trade union picket line outside a workplace during an industrial dispute. No protest movement has ever brought about change through a single demonstration. The civil rights movement, the campaign for women’s suffrage and the movement against apartheid in South Africa all relied on the ‘cumulative impact’ of repeated protests over many years.

The government has made clear that our marches are the main target of these measures. But this proposal follows a succession of anti-protest laws, and the labelling of non-violent direct action as terrorism, and could be used by this or a future government to stamp out protests of any kind.

Taking inspiration from the unbreakable resilience of the Palestinian people, we always say the best way to push back against repression is to keep on campaigning.

Sign the petition today and join us on Saturday 29 November, International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, in central London for our next National Demonstration for Palestine. We will not be silenced, and we will not stop until from the river to the sea, Palestine is free.

In solidarity,
