Lie = no choice but to return to fossil fuels and nuclear because of AI

Posted: 31st December 2025

There is a comforting lie spreading fast, repeated by governments, legacy

energy players, defence contractors, and now increasingly by parts of the
tech sector itself. It says that artificial intelligence has created an
unprecedented energy emergency, that AI requires vast, centralised,
always-on power, and that this necessity leaves us no choice but to return
to fossil fuels and nuclear energy. The lie works because it sounds
technical, urgent, and inevitable. It borrows the language of engineering
while quietly abandoning engineering logic altogether. AI did not demand
this outcome. Vested interests did. To understand what is really happening,
we need to separate physical necessity from political convenience. Once we
do that, the current pivot toward fossil fuels and nuclear energy stops
looking like realism and starts looking like a defensive manoeuvre by
incumbents facing an existential threat. That threat is not energy
scarcity. It is decentralisation.
