In early March, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak will unveil the 2021 Budget. CND will be publishing a full-page newspaper advert at this time, urging the government to scrap its commitment to replacing Trident and pivot towards a socially useful manufacturing policy instead.

The pandemic experience shows us that this is not the case, and it’s been done very quickly and effectively with government support.
Several arms manufacturers – including a number involved in nuclear weapons production – were members of the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium, which manufactured over 13,000 ventilators. Workers at the Barrow shipyard, where BAE systems is building Dreadnought submarines, were put to work on producing medical equipment.
This shows that change is possible. There are real opportunities for diverting military manufacturing towards renewable, sustainable and socially useful production. Instead of nuclear weapons, we should be investing in a sustainable energy sector and a properly funded NHS.
