The Astute project plans to deliver conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) for the Royal Navy. The seven Astute submarines were once hoped to be delivered by the end of this year, but this timeline is now very unlikely to be met.

Prospect Union members including nuclear scientists and engineers were on strike at the Atomic Weapons Establishment on 12 March. They claim a mismanaged reorganisation and lack of consultation has destabilised the organisation. Another strike is planned for 26 March. Meanwhile staff continue to ‘work to rule’.
