Help us keep up the pressure to stop Trump’s illegal war on Iran

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Three weeks into Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal war, over 2,000 people have been killed in Iran and over 1,000 dead in Lebanon. Hundreds more have been killed across the Middle East. Now the crisis has escalated even further with Donald Trump threatening that Iranian power plants will be bombed if Iran doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz.

With the situation changing minute by minute, Trump has since rolled back on the threat, claiming today that the US and Iran have been holding discussions to end the war – postponing such strikes for the next five days. However, Iran’s foreign ministry has said no such talks have taken place and that Trump’s remarks were part of efforts to reduce skyrocketing oil and gas prices and to “buy time” to implement his catastrophic military plans. Plans which could include the bombing of Iran’s coastal defences, the military occupation of Iran’s oil export terminal on Kharg Island and even a land invasion to capture Iran’s remaining enriched uranium. All have been described as deeply reckless and dangerous by military experts.

Trump is increasingly isolated, with European states, Britain and Japan all refusing to send warships to the Strait. This reflects the strong majority opposition that continues to grow the war. Over the weekend, thousands took to the streets of towns and cities across Britain in protests calling for an end to the war, including a demonstration in central London organised by CND, Stop the War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Muslim Association of Britain, Palestinian Forum in Britain and Friends of Al-Aqsa.

A powerful naming of the dead ceremony took place at RAF Fairford, where US heavy bombers have been flying daily bombing missions over Iran. Organised by Fairford Action and supported by CND, Drone Wars, and Oxfordshire Peace Campaign, protestors read out the names of children killed in the US illegal bombing of Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab at the start of the war.

All the demonstrations called for Keir Starmer to close down access to British bases and to firmly break with Trump’s foreign policy.

You can watch CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt’s speech at Saturday’s demonstration in London on our Instagram and Facebook pages. A report from TRT World on the demonstration at RAF Fairford can be watched here.

We will keep supporters updated of developments at this critical time. Amid this crisis, we’re increasing our campaigning activities. We really need your help to cover the additional costs of organising these critical demonstrations, including hiring stages, sound systems, making placards and hiring transport.

Please donate to CND today so we can continue to build public opposition to end Trump’s deadly war drive – and stop Britain’s active military involvement in an illegal war.
