As we enter the second month of the illegal US-Israel war on Iran, it is depressing yet predictable to see that it is us who pay the price for it.

As well as the incalculable and devastating cost to the people of Iran, remember that on day one of this war a girls’ primary school was hit by a missile killing 168 people, mostly children. Across the world, many people who are already struggling to afford to live, will be hit by the economic shock waves of another war.

Did Trump bomb Iranian schoolgirls with UK-made weaponry?

In Keir Starmer’s most recent statement on Iran – where he set out, in my opinion, the wholly inadequate ways the government will support people with the cost of living – one particular thing stood out as troubling. He said that “…how we emerge from this crisis will define us for a generation”.

Whilst this was couched in a sentence about fairness and security, it is disturbing to think that the Iran war is another moment in which the political establishment will justify cuts, double down on ‘growth’ through militarism and limit the expectations of what this government can do with the rest of their term. In much the same way Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the legacy of Coronavirus also provided cover for the UK establishment’s political choices.

In the same statement Starmer said that people “worry that the UK will be dragged into this. We won’t.” It is really astonishing that not one of the mainstream media journalists present pushed back on this false assertion.

Here our deputy editor Dania Akkad explains how Britain’s involvement in the war began back in January when both UK and American weaponry started moving east in preparation. Even the mainstream media calling this war illegal is a rarity as detailed hereby Des Freedman.

In this very powerful interview, US journalist and film director Abby Martin talks about how so few Americans agree with bombing Iran, how out of touch the US political class is, and how the corporate media operates. Here too in the UK, a recent YouGov poll showed that a majority oppose allowing the US to launch air strikes on Iran from RAF bases in the UK.

And yet, here we are, the UK is involved and we will pay the price for supporting the US war through a direct adverse impact on our standards of living. At Declassified, we will continue to scrutinse UK government complicity in the illegal war on Iran at this crucial time.

We have written extensively about Iran – read our Iran section here.
