You may have heard about the heroic work of Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon who has for decades been treating patients in Palestine, Lebanon and beyond, including children who have been horribly injured in Israel’s attacks.
I’m sure like me you’ll be angered to know that he is being targeted by anti-Palestinian groups, and now Britain’s medical regulator, the General Medical Council (GMC), is trying to stop him practicing. Already thousands of doctors have called on the GMC leadership to resign over this spurious attack, but we need to increase the pressure. Will you write to the GMC today too?
Write to the GMCDr. Abu-Sittah has spent more than three decades treating civilians injured in war. He has also been a strong and clear voice reporting on the impact of Israel’s horrific crimes against the Palestinian people.
The GMC appears to be targeting Dr. Abu-Sittah after pressure from UK Lawyers for Israel – a disgraced organisation which runs campaigns steeped in anti-Palestinian racism. Dr. Abu-Sittah was previously cleared of all allegations against him in a public Medical Practitioners Tribunal, but now the GMC is asking the High Court to overturn the decision.
Write to the GMCThis is an outrageous attempt to try and silence Palestinians like Dr. Abu-Sittah, and to prevent them from advocating for their own people’s safety, and for the wider principles of justice. It will not work. The integrity of medical regulation is fundamental not only to doctors, but to the safety, trust, and functioning of healthcare as a whole.
That is why thousands of doctors have written to the GMC about its unjust, inconsistent and politically influenced treatment of Dr. Abu-Sittah, which erodes confidence across the entire workforce and undermines the delivery of care to patients. We now need the public to reiterate these concerns and call on the GMC leadership to resign. Will you write to the GMC today?
Write to the GMCAs Israel escalates its unconscionable violence against the Palestinian people, we will not be distracted or silenced. As Dr. Abu-Sittah says, “it is your world to fight for. It is your tomorrow to make…We will own tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a Palestinian day.”
