Union labels Welsh Greens ‘unserious’ in its opposition to nuclear. It
comes as Zack Polanski attempts to attract disenfranchised unions away from
Labour. GMB Union has regarded the Welsh Green Party’s manifesto pledge to
oppose nuclear development as showing “how unserious they are.” It
comes as the Welsh Greens’ Senedd manifesto launch indicated its opposition
to all nuclear power, including Wylfa’s £2.5 billion small modular reactor
(SMR) plans in Anglesey, North Wales. Responding to the party’s opposition,
GMB senior organiser Tom Hoyles said: “There is no path to net zero
without new nuclear. And in these turbulent times, it is essential to
secure Wales and the UK’s energy security. The union, which represents over
half a million public and private workers in the UK, added: “Thousands of
Welsh workers are in the nuclear industry in Wales. This pledge would cost
them their jobs. “Welsh families’ energy bills would skyrocket without
investment into clean nuclear energy,” the union warned. Central message
on nuclear comes from Zack Polanski. It echoes the sentiment of the central
Green Party leader Zack Polanski’s stance on nuclear, which he argues
should be replaced by more wind and solar installations across the country.
The condemnation of its stance on nuclear could strike a blow to his charm
offensive to unions looking to draw funding from those who have previously
backed the Labour party.
