News from National CND: Nuclear Disarmament, Not Nuclear Hypocrisy! Join CND’s online side event from NPT Rev Con – 28 April

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

In the wake of Trump’s veiled nuclear threats against Iran – and with nuclear-armed states modernising and expanding their arsenals – diplomats, politicians and civil society will be gathering in New York for the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. These negotiations couldn’t come at a more critical time.

Running from 27 April to 22 May, CND along with other representatives from the nuclear disarmament movement will be there to keep the pressure up on these states to abide by their commitments. Our online side event from New York, ‘Nuclear Disarmament, Not Nuclear Hypocrisy,’ brings together leading voices from parliament, civil society, and science to expose the contradictions at the heart of the system and to demand a way forward.

  • Tuesday, 28 April
  • 5:00pm (UK) / 12 noon (New York)
  • Online, register here

With guest speakers including Melissa Parke, ICAN Executive Director; Zia Mian, Co-director Program on Science and Global Security, Princeton University and co-chair of the UN Scientific Advisory Group; and Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP, Vice-Chair of Parliamentary CND and Jackie Cabasso, Executive Director, Western States Legal Foundation and Peace Activist. Chaired by Sophie Bolt, CND General Secretary.

It is a call to name the hypocrisy, face the science and build the movement to end it. We hope you will join us!

No Nuclear War! Protest against the expiry of New START

As part of CND’s activities during the NPT Review Conference, we’re organising two protests against the expiry of the last arms control treaty between the US in Russia. Between them, these countries possess over 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons. The New START treaty, which put limits on the amount of strategic nuclear weapons that both countries can deploy, expired in February without any replacement. This represents a serious and dangerous step backwards for global arms control as there are now no limits at all on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals.

Getting both sides back to the negotiating table is critical. They can first agree to a temporary extension to New START while negotiations on a replacement get underway. This would be a vital step in decreasing nuclear tensions. These protests are also an opportunity to show both to the US and Russia that people in Britain want an end to the nuclear threats we face now.

Join us outside their respective Embassies to urge Russian President Putin and US President Trump to negotiate a new agreement, rather than drive a new nuclear arms race which threatens us all!
