This week in the Digest we remember Chornobyl (we are using the Ukrainian spelling) 40 years on. The campaign to downplay and dismiss the real health consequences continues unabated while the actual site remains in peril as Russia’s war against Ukraine drags on.

Arguably the most heinous crime - other than the April 1986 nuclear disaster itself - has been the decades-long campaign to cover up, downplay and discount the true health impacts of arguably the world’s worst commercial nuclear tragedy. The lie that “no one died” - or only a handful of liquidators - persists, a convenient way to erase the accident and minimize its harm.
