Dearest All,
NATO accounts for over half of global military spending. According to SIPRI data, in 2025 its 32 member states spent a combined $1.58 trillion—approximately 55% of the world’s total—with the United States alone contributing around 60% of that figure. Across Europe, defence spending reached $559 billion, and 22 countries met or exceeded the 2% of GDP benchmark. Germany increased its budget to $114 billion, a 24% rise that brings it to 2.3% of GDP—the highest level since 1990—while Spain’s spending rose by 50% to $40.2 billion, surpassing the 2% threshold for the first time since 1994.
As Kate Hudson of No to War – No to NATO states, “These figures reveal the shocking truth: Europe is the main contributor to the global increase in military spending – a 14% rise. This will come at the expense of our communities, our public services, our social support. Our societies are being trashed for weapons and war. It’s time for this to end.”
It is time for us to join together and call on governments around the world to cut military spending, and put an end to wars and arms racing. See GDAMS post suggestions and our infographics (also in Canva) and other materials to use on your social media.
