US - Nuclear Ships

America’s new multibillion-pound “Trump-class” battleships will be

nuclear-powered, the US navy has announced, adding cost and complexity to
the controversial project. New plans submitted to Congress suggest the
£12.5bn ships – named after the US president – will use nuclear
reactors instead of gas turbine or diesel engines normally operated in
destroyers, as well as unproven next-generation weapons, including lasers.
The US navy said the current flagship destroyer, the Arleigh Burke-class,
had reached “the limits of its capacity” and that the proposed
Trump-class battleships would be more robust than any previous vessels.
