Israel and nuclear weapons

Posted: 25th January 2021

I am writing to you about the momentous
and wonderful news that finally, after painstaking work
by so many ever since 1948, with the implementation of the
Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons TPNW yesterday,
nuclear weapons have officially been declared to be illegal.

Please see and join:

In my view, while this is good news for all people and all nations
to celebrate it is also of specific interest to Palestine.
The nuclear powers still need to ratify and disarm
and among these is Israel with its top secret
nuclear weapons establishment at Dimona
in the Negev Desert.
If you search the ICAN site for Middle East
you will see where our petition is coming from.
Notably that not only is Israel the only nuclear weaponised state
in the region, ( it hasn’t signed either the Non-Proliferation Treaty NPT
or the new Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons TPNW ),
Palestine on the other hand, which is typically portrayed as being
Terrorist, has signed both.
Evidence yet again of Western media and Govt bias
and the marginalising and silencing of its voice.

This I believe therefore should be, in view of the nuclear ban,
foremost in our attention, for it offers us a great opportunity
as with BLM, show the red card to racism and stop arming Israel
to work in solidarity alongside other campaigns which Palestinians would identify with.
In this case the obvious one would be CND
and actually ICAN itself because this would be specifically
in our interests as supporters of the cause of Palestine
and Palestinians.

To this end, I along with other anti-war activists
here in Norwich, have managed to get a petition
on the Govt Petition Site which in the current context
regarding criticism of Israel, was a considerable achievement in itself.
It has now gathered 900 signatures
which is very creditable but in order to reach
the critical 10,000 in order to receive a response
from Govt it needs to go up a gear
and this is why I am appealing to you.
Firstly to add your own signatures
and to share with those you know.

Secondly, petitions are now, especially when action on the streets
is extremely difficult owing to COVID,
a very valuable campaign tool, both for solidarity building
and also collective action.
Ours is very topical indeed now
and support from PSC would be invaluable.
If it could be recommended on a voluntary basis
to membership this would give it a huge boost
and in my opinion be very valuable to the cause of Palestine.
I have by the way visited many times and also lived and worked there too.

It takes little time or effort to sign and every signature
is and would be invaluable.

As such I recommend it to you all remembering of course
that some of you have kindly signed already.

With all respects
and in solidarity
and sincerely
