Stop the War Coalition

Newsletter 22/05/26

This week, Trump is again threatening Iran. If Iran fails to make a deal soon, there “won’t be anything left,” the president said. At the same time he ramped up his rhetoric against Cuba and indicted Raul Castro. Severe sanctions are crippling the island’s economy and military attacks by US forces are being openly discussed.

The perilous state of the world is there for all to see.

At home the MOD is drawing up plans for the ‘mass mobilisation’ of civilian volunteers, hyping up the threat of a ‘full blown war’. Here and across Europe the political and military elites talk of pumping more cash into the production of weapons, saying we will have to sacrifice public services and pay more for the continent’s ‘defence’. Their support for warfare over welfare is clear.

Meanwhile the economic cost of the Middle East war is coming home to bite, so much so that the government has been in talks with supermarkets about food price freezes. The cost of borrowing is rising along with the cost of basic commodities, yet we are continually told more money will be spent on the military. Diane Abbott tabled an Early Day Motion this week urging the government to do what it can to end any support for the war with Iran to prevent the continued escalation of the cost of living. The need for a strong international movement demanding welfare not warfare and wages not weapons is urgent – the International Conference Against War could not be more timely.

Watch and share this short video of holocaust survivor, Stephen Kapos explaining why he is coming to the conference, and why you should too.

The lineup of speakers gets more impressive day by day and the list of those backing the conference is growing fast. This week the largest UK union, UNISON, gave its support for the conference. We now have 11 national unions and 105 local branches and trades councils declaring their support. nh_fNJk9dl8NiOAEYEo_Ci6Gd3gzW9SYHS9PmxL3XIuGJ71zk7O0u_gRFYkIrkce9HFoRSU/4qu/dk4QGOfsSM2-rN-zdKYemg/h7/h001.-FjWtxDX7aZVgtx8pkvvYejyatCQ4saGHcTUDRhi-e0”>Download the motion to support the conference

Met Commissioner Mark Rowley must go!

The Met under Rowley’s leadership has been conducting a campaign of political policing – openly lying about the intentions of Palestine protestors, giving favour to the far right, and systematically downplaying incidents of Islamophobic hate crime.

Read our statement on political policing of the Palestine marcheshere.

We ask all our supporters to write and tell London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP and Rena Lalgie, Chief Executive of MOPAC (Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime) that Rowley must go.
