NATO announces more spending as Ukraine war enters new deadly phase

NATO leaders met in Ankara this week announcing $50 billion worth of new arms procurements and a commitment to ramp up manufacturing capacity for even more lethal weaponry. Also announced was $60 billion in military support for Ukraine this year with a similar level promised for 2027. Noticeably absent from the nuclear-armed alliance’s final declaration was how the conflict will come to an end.

The war in Ukraine is entering a new phase of lethality. According to the UN, June had the highest number of Ukrainians civilian casualties since the first months of the war in 2022. According to the UN’s Office ⁠of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the trend of long-range attacks on Ukraine is set to continue in July. This comes as Donald Trump gave Ukraine permission to produce Patriot missiles on license.

NATO members were also put under further pressure to commit to 5% of GDP on annual military expenditure. Read more here.

CND and Scottish CND joint webinar: The effects of a nuclear attack on Faslane – 23 July

With the risk of nuclear weapons being used at its highest since the Cold War, it is vital that we raise awareness about the reality of nuclear war. Britain’s nuclear infrastructure – like its nuclear bases at Faslane and Coulport in Scotland – will be the first targets in a nuclear war, with deadly consequences for the entire island and beyond.
