Andy Burnham is set to become prime minister in a week’s time. But will he simply be a new face fronting the same old politics? Or will the new PM take a different direction, away from militarism and war?
His apology last week signified an acknowledgement of the electoral damage Starmer’s pro-Israeli policies have had on Labour. The strength of the Palestine movement and its impact on the general public is clearly an important aspect in Burnham’s thinking. But his apology was partial and his refusal to call Israel’s actions a genocide signifiant. Israel must be held to account, be sanctioned and a full arms embargo introduced. Words arenot enough.
The new PM has also indicated ‘defence’ will be his ‘first priority’. He has promised to find billions of pounds in his first budget to ensure Starmer’s military spending targets are met.
As well as being the lead voice against this rise of militarism, Stop the War has played a central role in the Palestine movement – including helping to organise the next national march for Palestine on Saturday 18 July.
