National CND: Lobby the new PM: Stop the war drive! Say no to nuclear threats!

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

As Andy Burnham takes over a Prime Minister today, CND has written to him urging him to take a new direction to the disastrous path of Starmer.

You can read CND’s letter to the Prime Minister here.

As well as reversing the decision to purchase nuclear-capable fighter jets and redirect military spending into boosting public services, we are calling on him to end British support for Trump’s deadly wars. Following a collapse of the ceasefire, the US-led illegal war on Iran is now escalating to all-out confrontation once again. Nearly forty Iranian civilians and a number of US troops in Iraq and Jordan have been killed.

We’re calling on Burnham to push for a diplomatic solution to the crisis and ensure Britain gives no support for another illegal war. This means ruling out the use of British bases by the Trump administration and withdrawing all British military presence in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region.

TONIGHT’S WEBINAR: Justice for nuclear test veterans: stop the nuclear arms race

Another key decision facing Andy Burnham is whether he will provide compensation for British nuclear test veterans. Tonight we will be holding an online interview with Alan Owen, co-founder of Labrats International, a campaign group seeking justice for them. The event follows the publication last week of Ministry of Defence reports into missing medical records sought by nuclear test veterans and their descendants for a legal challenge against the MoD.

These reports shine a spotlight onto the value placed on nuclear weapons over human life. The MoD has admitted publicly for the first time that veterans’ blood and urine tests taken during nuclear testing have been lost or destroyed. Test veterans and their families have sought these records for decades, as disproportionate numbers have serious multi-generational cancers, blood disorders and serious medical conditions that they rightly believe are caused by exposure to radioactive fallout.

Having these records would go a long way to help the NHS provide proper healthcare for them and their descendants’ illnesses. However, the government is shamefully whitewashing its responsibility and won’t admit that its nuclear weapons programme has put thousands of people at risk rather than keeping us safe.

Hosted by CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt, we’ll get Alan’s reaction to the reports, what he’s demanding from Andy Burnham as new Prime Minister, and the next steps in their campaign for justice and compensation.
